By the British GP at Aintree the Vanwall team were still to enjoy the fruits of their labours but were encouraged to have Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks sandwiching Behra (Maserati) on the front row of the grid. And what a race ensued! The footage from this event captures one of Moss' greatest ever victories. You'll really appreciate how good a drive this was!

VE Day - 60th Anniversary Edition
Commemorating the end of the Second World War against Germany in Europe. 8th May 1945 was declared Victory in Europe or VE-Day after the German surrender. The second had gone on for longer and caused far greater world-wide death and destruction. It was the culmination of six years of bloody warfare which had devastated the continent and killed tens of millions of people and witnessed the true horror of the Nazi's Final Solution. People were exhausted and only too aware that the conflict must continue until Japan was also defeated.

Velvet Underground, The - Velvet Redux - Live MCMXCIII
The reunited quartet of Lou Reed, Moe Tucker, John Cale and Sterling Morrison. The Velvet Underground decided to call it quits in 1970, and the last thing anyone expected was for them to reform. In the regular series of recordings from the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, TDK releases Verdi?s farcical opera Falstaff under the direction of the renowned Festival?s artistic director, Zubin Mehta. Adapted by Arrigo Boito from Shakespeare's play The Merry Wives of Windsor, Falstaff was Verdi's last opera and one of his few comedies. It was also the third of Verdi's operas to be based on a Shakespearean play, and while not as immensely popular as the works that immediately preceded it (Aida and Otello) Falstaff?s refinement and melodic invention have made it a long term favourite with both artists and audience. The main characters are sung by leading exponents of their respective roles, including Barbara Frittoli, who sang Alice in the production that marked the reopening of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, while the action revolves around Ruggero Raimondi, one of the foremost Falstaffs of recent years. The domesticity of the setting is very like that of a contemporary sitcom, where Alice Ford represents the perfect, desirable housewife and Ford the eternal jealous husband. This has made it easy to transfer the subject to our own time. Luca Ronconi?s production for the 2006 Maggio Musicale Fiorentino takes advantage of this, finding ready equivalents for Shakespeare?s Windsor in both the social context and imagery of modern Britain ? an enjoyable comedy and a musical feast for home-viewing.

To be counted as one of the most important European masters in the field of the music theatre in the 19th century, a composer sooner or later had to present his works at the Paris Opera for discussion. The Paris premiere of Jerusalem, a magnificent production at the Opera on 26 November 1847, must be regarded as a successful French debut for Verdi, which paved the way for continued co-operation with the prestigious theatre. Ten years later a Paris critic commented that with Jerusalem Verdi had earned citizenship in France, and the Opera had acquired another masterwork.

Verdi?s famous Requiem became popular with a broader audience when it was performed at Princess Diana of Wales? funeral almost ten years ago. Just like the Mozart Requiem it has always been a work that people turned to in times of grief and more than 130 years after its premiere, it remains a uniquely stirring work that goes far beyond the confines of the liturgy, transcending denominational boundaries and speaking to the whole of the human race. TDK now presents the recording of a concert that was a mark of solidarity in times of global mourning when, two years ago, on 26 December 2004, the earth beneath the Indian Ocean shook and the third-largest earthquake ever recorded, triggered a tsunami that cost the lives of more than 200,000 people, chiefly in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India, and left almost two million people homeless. Just over a month after the flood catastrophe, the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini performed Giuseppe Verdi?s Requiem under Zubin Mehta?s direction in the concert hall at Renzo Piano?s Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome. Mehta gathered a high-ranking cast of soloists for this concert, all of them well known for their singing of the Italian dramatic repertory. Conductor, orchestra, chorus and soloists all donated their fees, not only for the concert itself but also for the current recording, to the victims of the tsunami.

Verdi - Rigoletto - Silvestrelli/ Servile
A filmed stage performance of the famed opera by Giuseppe Verdi. The story takes place in the city of Mantua and outskirts in the sixteenth century. The Duke of Mantua is hosting a feast at his palace and casting his eyes over every woman there. He tells his courtier Borsa that he has also seen a young girl in the church whom he means to have. Count Ceprano is leaving the party with his wife, when the Duke turns his attention to her, in front of her jealous husband, who is cruelly mocked by Rigoletto, the court jester. Another courtier, Marullo, rushes in with a fine new joke it appears that the ugly, deformed Rigoletto is keeping a mistress. The Duke and Rigoletto openly discuss how to deal with the troublesome Ceprano shall he be exiled or beheaded? Ceprano conspires with Marullo, Borsa and the other courtiers to take revenge on the jester who has made all of them the butt of his vicious jokes. The feast is interrupted by the arrival of Monterone, a nobleman whose daughter has already been seduced and abandoned by the Duke. Rigoletto taunts him mercilessly and the Duke orders Monterone's arrest. Monterone damns them both, hurling a curse on the jester who can make sport of a father's grief. Rigoletto is on his way home, deeply troubled by Monterone's curse, when he meets Sparafucile, a hired killer. Sparafucile has been watching Rigoletto's house, and knows that Rigoletto keeps a woman there. He guesses that the jester must be a man with rivals and enemies, and so offers his services. Rigoletto sends him away, but ascertains where and when he can find him in the future. It is not Rigoletto's mistress but his daughter, Gilda, who lives in the house, and she rushes into his arms as he enters. Meanwhile the Duke is skulking in the shadows outside, disguised in poor clothes. When Rigoletto leaves, Giovanna (the housekeeper who is already in the Duke's pay) lets the Duke in disguise into the courtyard. He passionately declares his love for Gilda, and she - though at first terrified - gradually gives in to him. He tells her his name is Gualtier Malde, and that he is only a poor student. Then the Duke hears footsteps outside and, fearing that it is Rigoletto returning, leaves. The footsteps belong, however, to Marullo and Borsa, and as Gilda repeats the name of her lover over and over to herself in rapture, they are joined by Ceprano and the other courtiers. They have come to abduct the girl they believe to be Rigoletto's mistress. But at that moment Rigoletto himself appears. Marullo hushes the others, and manages to convince Rigoletto that it is the wife of Ceprano they have come to kidnap from the palace across the street. Under the cover of the pitch black night, they blindfold Rigoletto and confuse him into holding the ladder by which they break into his own house and emerge dragging Gilda. Rigoletto doesn't hear her distant screams, but touching his face he discovers Marullo's trick and then the empty house. In anguis

Direct American involvement in support of the South began in 1955 with the arrival of the first advisors. The first combat troops arrived in 1965 and so began the Vietnam War, the longest and most unpopular war, to date, that America has ever fought. Vietnam 1965-1969 is the remarkable record of the incumbent American Administration's presentation of events to support their cause. A presentation that bore so little resemblance to what most American service men endured during their tour of duty it became inevitable that a nation began to question the policies and actions of a government they had always trusted films such as the Deerhunter were perceived as the reality of the Vietnam War and its effects on the nation. Almost 30,000 Americans were killed in combat action but what the war did to Vietnam and to the Vietnamese people was even more drastic. By the time Saigon fell to invading North Vietnamese forces on April 29, 1975, close to 2 million Vietnamese had died. Countless others perished or disappeared later in Cambodia during the carnage perpetuated by the Khmer Rouge. The Vietnam conflict was a war whose origins many did not understand, that history has proved to be an exercise in futility.
The Vietnam War - Almost 60,000 Americans were killed in combat action but what the war did to Vietnam and to the Vietnamese people was even more drastic. By the time Saigon fell to invading North Vietnamese forces on April 29th, 1975, close to 2 million Vietnamese had died. Countless others perished or disappeared later in Cambodia during the carnage perpetuated by the Khmer Rouge. The Vietnam conflict was a war whose origins many did not understand, that seemed an exercise in futility, and that left a nation questioning the policies of a government they had always trusted. The first combat troops arrived in 1965 and so began the Vietnam War, to date, the longest and most unpopular war Americans have ever fought. Vietnam, 1967 - 1969 is a remarkable record of the American Administration's presentation of events, at the time, to support their cause which most would believe had little in common with the needs or wishes of the American people, the world in general and the reality of war that films such as 'The Deerhunter' subsequently portrayed with graphic reality.
The Vietnam War arose out of a civil war between two competing philosophies. The south Vietnamese did not want to be part of the pro-Communist system being set up by the north so the country was divided along the 17th parallel latitude. This programme provides an insight into the story of the war and an exploration of the impact of American involvement in it.

A pupil under Gilles Tremblay and Karlheinz Stockhausen, he soon created his own dazzling vocal and orchestral language, profoundly marked by his travels to the Far East. The interweaving of his personal and professional life, of the real and the imaginary, reveals a compelling global awareness, deep human compassion and a universal quest for ultimate enlightenment. Vivier himself pursued this journey of discovery, until his tragic murder in Paris at the age of thirty-four. The two parts of Reves d'un Marco Polo are like shadow and light, forming a dreamlike ritualistic experience and encompassing stage productions of his finest compositions. Pierre Audi's superb and moving staging is complemented by refined, passionate musical direction from Reinbert de Leeuw, leading the soloists, the Asko Ensemble and the Schonberg Ensemble to great heights.
