Written by Oscar nominated screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (The Full Monty Among Giants), director Kenneth Glenaan's award winning film is a compelling and topical drama set amongst a Muslim community in the north of England before and after the events of 9/11. Yasmin (Archie Panjabi) is a confident and Westernised young Muslim woman living and working in a northern mill town. Although she had previously rebelled against her Pakistani customs as a teenager, with the help of her friends and co-workers she has now begun trying to live simultaneously within the conflicting traditions of both British and Pakistani cultures. In order to appease her widowed father, Yasmin agrees to marry a cousin 'from home'. Unfortunately, her new husband turns out to be a Pakistani goatherd unversed in Western ways. Yasmin's confidence begins to evaporate post-9/11, when she becomes increasingly ostracised at work and her husband is interred as a result of the new anti-terror laws. Facing a serious crisis of identity and fighting for her husband's release, Yasmin discovers a new determination and sense of purpose when she is forced to re-evaluate not only her relationships but also her faith and her culture. The winner of the Audience Award at the Dinard British Film Festival and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the Locarno Internal Film Festival in 2004, this is a powerful and thought-provoking film that looks at what it means to be Asian, Muslim and British in the 21st century.
