Halloween - Resurrection : short review

Halloween - Resurrection

Proving beyond all doubt that people will do anything to get on television, 'dangertainment' entrepreneur Freddie Harris has no shortage of applicants for his Big Brother-style show, set over one night in the house of notorious Michael Myers. The six lucky winners will be watched by hidden cameras as they try to work out what made Myers the masked monster we all know and love. However, unknown to the contestants, Mike isn't half as dead as the ending of Halloween H20 would have them believe...

Tree Grows In Brooklyn, A

Based on the acclaimed best-selling novel by Betty Smith. Adapted by Frank Davis, Tess Slesinger and Anita Loos (Gentlemen Prefer Blondes), the film relates the trials and tribulations of the Nolans, a turn-of-the-century Brooklyn tenement family. The father (James Dunn) is a likable but irresponsible pie-in-the-sky alcoholic whose dreams of improving his family's lot are invariably doomed to disappointment. The mother (Dorothy McGuire) is the true head of the household, steadfastly holding the family together no matter what crisis arises. Told from the point of view of the Nolan's adoring daughter (Peggy Ann Garner), the film is a coming of age tale that resonated with an American nation in need of reassurance. Evoking New York circa 1900, the film garnered a Best Supporting Actor Oscar (R) for James Dunn and was also nominated in the Best Screenplay category. Later it would spawn a Broadway musical and a 1974 TV movie of the same name.

Wilt/ Leon The Pig Farmer/Personal Services

Boxset containing three films. Wilt - A mild college lecturer becomes the prime murder suspect when his overbearing wife goes missing and he is found to have buried a body in concrete on a building site - in reality an embarassing inflatable love doll! Based on the novel by Tom Sharpe, it's a winning big-screen debut for TV buddies Smith and Jones. Personal Services - A waitress who starts by renting bedsits to prostitutes drifts into the life herself and becomes a successful madam, catering to the whims and fantasies of a faithful, upper-class clientele. Loosely based on the life of Cynthia Payne, despite its adult subject it comes over as cosy and British as a nice cup of tea. Leon The Pig Farmer - Hilarious low-budget British movie, gently poking fun at Jewish-gentile stereotypes. A Jewish man finds his real father is a Yorkshire pig farmer and going up to visit, discovers his new family have gone all-out Jewish in order to make him feel at home. Won the 1992 International Critic's prize in Venice.

At the very heart of Indian culture - in religion, myth and legend - The Mahabharata is one of the oldest stories in the world, the first known written versions dating back to the 5th Century BC. It is also the longest poem ever written - at more than 100,000 stanzas it is 15 times the length of the Bible. Peter Brook's film version of The Mahabharata met with global success when it was released to cinemas around the world in 1989. The central story is the family feud between two groups of rival cousins, the Pandavas and the Kauravas, which becomes a world-shattering war, leaving millions dead. But the art of The Mahabharata is intricate, full of fantastic digressions, illuminating subplots, dazzling shifts of perspective from the human to the supernatural, turning this mythological epic into a story for all mankind.
