The inhabitants of a New York tenement face eviction when their seedy building is slated for demolition. Suddenly out of the night comes a fleet of pocket-sized alien space ships with miraculous mechanical powers and soon the crumbling brownstone is transformed into an elegant landmark. Thirteen year old Janey must cope with the knowledge that her parent's marriage is falling apart. The family are staying in an isolated cottage for the summer holidays and Janey has been left in charge of her brother Jim. Her mother is having an affair, her father has taken to drink and they throw parties every night to escape from the reality of the situation. In the midst of this, Janey begins to discover her own sexuality and the difficult feelings and issues that can arise from this.
